On 1 July 1995, Spain will take over the Presidency of the European Union for a period of six months. The EMBASSY OF SPAIN in Ottawa will provide information to all the users of "SI, SPAIN" about the main events and activities that are going to be carried out during the six months of the Spanish Presidency, from July to December 1995.
The EUROPEAN UNION represents a unique relationship between nations, with the aim of constructing a united Europe. The three founding Communities (ECSC, the European Coal and Steel Community; Euratom, the European Atomic Energy Community; and the EEC, the European Economic Community) are now encompassed within the European Union. The European Communities' founding Treaties created institutions that were given many of the legislative, executive and judicial powers traditionally exercised by Member States at the national level. The European Union now encompasses these institutions: the EUROPEAN COUNCIL, the COMMISSION, the COUNCIL of the EUROPEAN UNION, the ECONOMIC and SOCIAL COMMITTEE, the COMMITTEE of the Regions, the COURT of JUSTICE, the COURT of AUDITORS, and the EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT.
The PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION rotates among the Member States every six months, and the first time that Spain took over such a Presidency, after its accession to the European Community on 1 January 1986, was on 1 January 1989.
